I think there was a man, long ago, who pushed for a peaceful revolution: the Kingdom of God. But hey, what we got was the Church. The Church's attempts at being a foretaste of that coming Kingdom are filled with holes and mistakes; yet I believe and trust that this body, nevertheless, participates in that peaceful revolution built upon the foundation of Christ.

What I think we need is a Church that reclaims the role as a herald/outpost/foretaste of that 'original revolution'; a revolution that takes Luke 4's platform statement as its key mission proclamation.

It's discouraging to think that as military budgets increase, organizations like MCC and CPT struggle to get enough funds to run their important ministries.

Scott
You have pinpointed an essential truth. WE obsess over things that affect us personally, rather than those that may have much more impact in the wider picture.
Interesting quote that's on the Grant Transport sign (thought you might like something from New Hamburg):
An ounce of action is worth a ton of worry.
Or something close to that.
Thanks for the interesting post.

The base concern with H1N1 Flu or any other pandemic is not how lethal it may be, but that it may affect me--affluent Western me. Each day, thousands of children die of hunger, and how do we, including the media, respond? Moreover, we can do something about world hunger, but we do little.

This is a very interesting post, and I take your point, I disagree however in your use of individualism. Society is not merely the sum of the individuals in it, nor do I think that individualism is the solution to the problems of the world. Certainly things like anger in our personal relationships and greed at Christmas and other holidays are places which all of us can improve on our peacefulness and do so immediately. I think that it is dangerous of us to separate the personal from the political. It is not only that we are violent in our personal lives but that we are also complicit in larger systemic violence. Eliminating negative subconscious states is important but we should not let it distract us from the important task of radically changing the violent structures of this world.

The irony of questioning what is a respectable income is that many of our highly touted Mennonite Institutions/organizations (like MCC) along with many other non-profit organizationss depend on large financial donors and corporations.

The question is where does this money come from?

Is it helpful if the places, organizations or corporations where we work and earn our incomes or that support Mennonite Institutions are strong contributers to the very systems that are furthering oppression, inequality and destruction locally and globally?

Whoop-de-do if I work for a nice little NGO peace and justice organztion that works for change but then went saved $100 by shopping at big box land, bought copious amounts of international produce from a food provider superpower.

Or, good on me if I work hard to gross $100,000 in my job building houses for people who really can't afford them but give my %10 to the church or MCC.

Life really is about lifestyle choices, at least, that's what Jesus seemed to convey.

Maybe we also need to consider where we choose to earn our incomes?

Thanks for your thoughts, Raul. I think you are right when you say that fear is a big part of the reason why people do not engage the political process. Are apathy or inertia also part of it? Perhaps becuase so many of us have grown up in contexts of privilege and not in contexts of war, like you have, we simply don't care as much as we should. I appreciate your challenge that we should confront the powers.
